Alienware Support Gateway Inc., previously Gateway 2000, was an American computer hardware company based in South Dakota and later California, that developed, manufactured, supported and marketed a wide range of personal computerscomputer monitorsservers, and computer accessories.It was acquired by Acer in October 2007.

Roots

Gateway was founded on September 5, 1985, on a farm outside Sioux CityIowa, by Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond. Originally called Gateway 2000, it was one of the first widely successful direct-sales PC companies, utilizing a sales model copied from Dell, and playing up its Iowa roots with low-tech advertisements proclaiming "Computers from Iowa?"

Starting with a $10,000 loan guaranteed by his grandmother, a rented computer and a three-page business plan, founder Ted Waitt turned Gateway into a revolutionary company whose innovations helped shape the technology industry.
Growth

The company—previously called Gateway 2000 -received national acclaim in 1991 when it introduced its distinctive cow-spotted boxes, a tribute to its agrarian heritage. In 1993, it entered the Fortune 500 and went public, trading on the NASDAQ before moving its stock to the New York Stock Exchange in 1997.
